Presentation of the MSc Programme

The School of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has organized and operated, since the academic year 2018–2019, the MSc Programme entitled “Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders – Laboratory and Clinical Sleep Medicine”, in accordance with the provisions of Law 4485/2017.

The MSc Programme aims to provide postgraduate students with high-level education so that they acquire a strong scientific background, experience and expertise in a particularly dynamic field of modern science: sleep, and especially sleep-related breathing disorders.

Eligible Applicant Categories

The MSc Programme accepts graduates from a broad range of scientific fields related to the subject area of Sleep Medicine.

Special Categories

Members of the EEP, EDIP and ETEP categories may be admitted as additional students, in accordance with paragraph 8 of Article 34 of Law 4485/2017.

Admission Procedure

Student selection is carried out in accordance with Law 4485/2017 and the provisions of the Postgraduate Studies Regulations.

Every May, following a decision of the Assembly of the NKUA School of Medicine, a call for applications for the admission of postgraduate students is published on the websites of the MSc Programme and the University.

Applications, together with the required supporting documents, are submitted to the Secretariat of the MSc Programme within the deadline specified in the call for applications, which may be extended by decision of the School Assembly.

Duration of Studies

The duration of studies, possibilities for extension, and conditions for suspension are determined by the Regulations of the MSc Programme.

Standard Duration of Studies

The duration of study in the MSc Programme leading to the award of the Master’s Degree is four (4) academic semesters, including the period required for preparation of the Master’s thesis.

Extension of Studies

The maximum permitted period for completion of studies is six (6) academic semesters, provided that the postgraduate student submits a justified request for an extension of up to two consecutive semesters after the end of the standard duration of study.

The application is submitted to the Secretariat of the MSc Programme and, following a recommendation by the Steering Committee, is forwarded to the School Assembly for approval, which issues the final decision.

Suspension of Studies

A postgraduate student may submit a reasoned request to the Steering Committee of the MSc Programme for suspension of studies.

Approval requires documented socioeconomic or health-related reasons. Semesters during which student status is suspended are not counted toward the prescribed maximum duration of standard study.

The theoretical education of students takes place in the auditorium of the 1st Department of Critical Care Medicine, NKUA School of Medicine, at Evangelismos Hospital (the “Konstantinos Gardikas” Auditorium, capacity 50, Nursing Service Building, 5th floor).

Presentations in the auditorium are also broadcast live online, with the support of the NKUA Computing and Internet Department, for students who are unable to attend in person, with the possibility of direct participation.
